Travians - GAME DESCRIPTION (1)

OVERVIEW

According to Travian Games GmbH (2009), Travians is a role-playing game in which you rise to the challenge of everyday life as a villager during classic antiquity. Like the original Travian game, “graphics in Travians are minimal but slightly more advanced than the browser war game Travian” (Fryer, 2008). The game sounds more like The Sims than Travian. It is free to play and uses an AJAX programming environment
rather than Adobe Flash. Then, it can be played from an iPhone whereas lot of Flash-based games cannot.

In Travians gamers can learn professions, build their own house, harvest resources, work, and trade and fight other gamers. All the game long a frame narrative offers challenges. Travian Games company (2009) explained that the key to success is interacting with other members of the huge village community. One of “the most important foci of Travians is collaboration and communication” (Fryer, 2008). This is the only way to get fun clubs and powerful guilds with magnificent houses. On the contrary, Travian focuses on war.

Travians is a very social game. You play against other live players, a chat box is permanently displayed, and “the use of messaging is encouraged” (Travians, 2009). Moreover, players can create blogs, and play number of mini games, such as Black Jack and Poker, to earn points and experience.
