Travians - GAME DESCRIPTION (2)

HOW TO PLAY

THE CHARACTERS

As a start, after the registration, the player has to choose between three tribes: Romans, Teutons, or Gauls. The player will be one character from his chosen tribe all game long. He can choose whether his character is male or female. The game takes place in real time, and the character ages as the game goes on. “At 111 days, he retires and the gamer take on the role of that character’s descendent” (Travians, 2009).

OCCUPATIONS AND ACTIONS
According to Fryer (2008), the characters have to sleep, eat, wash, etc. If, for example, your character does not periodically wash, his hygiene score will be too low. Then, other characters will not trade and interact with him and it will be complicated to progress in the game. Moreover, if his character is too tired, he will not be able to work and have money.
Soon after the game starts, the character will have to “take one of four occupations: miner, lumberjack, clay digger, or farmer” (Travians, 2009). Later in the game, additional occupations become available: brick maker, carpenter, miller, charcoal burner, iron founder, and baker.

MONEY
To earn money, a player must make his character work hardly. The tasks he will have to do are to collect resources, such as “wood, clay, ore, grain”, or secondary resources, such as “bread, iron, coal, boards, bricks, and flour” (Travians, 2009). After that, he will have to take those resources to create items. For example, “take clay and create pottery items” (Travians, 2009). Then, character has to sell its items for “copper” in markets. In terms of money, “100 copper coins make a silver one, and 100 silver coins make a gold coin” (Travians, 2009). Fryer (2008), explained that, until it is not required, players can spend real money in the game to purchase diamonds. Then, these diamonds can be converted into game cash.

SOCIAL POINTS
Apart from money, the game also uses ‘social points’ which you get from playing in-game minigames, such as tic-tac-toe, poker, or blackjack with other players. To earn social points your character can also do social acions such as wash dishes. “Social Points are used to buy furniture for the character’s virtual house, or even to buy a new house” (Travians, 2009).

Furthermore, during the game the character has to build his own house. As a start, he inherits an old house from his uncle, but as a bed, the character must sleep on the ground. To improve his house the character will have to buy lot and lot of furniture. Then, the player can invite virtual friends and other players to come and visit his house.

IMPORTANT POINT
To start and progress in the game the player will have to chat with many players, joins guilds, clubs, play minigames with real players, and ask other gamers if he can wash in his house. It is very difficult to play the game if you do not make friends during the game.
